The Science of Brown Noise

Brown noise — also called Brownian noise or red noise — is named after Brownian motion, the random movement of particles. Its power drops steeply by 6 dB per octave, so almost all of its energy sits in the low frequencies. That gives it a deep, rumbling, thunder-like character.

Because it concentrates energy in the bass range, brown noise is gentler on ears sensitive to high frequencies and is popular for deep focus and relaxation. It is also a demanding signal for subwoofers and full-range speakers, since only capable systems can reproduce its lowest components cleanly.

A repeatable check

What the result suggests
