How do I test my microphone online?

Check the displayed input device, speaking distance and system input level. Change one setting and repeat the recording. Automatic gain, noise suppression and the microphone position can all affect the result.
Can I choose a microphone or test on a phone?
After granting access, select an available input and press Start again. Inputs exposed by the browser vary with the device, connection and permissions; Bluetooth or headset routing is not guaranteed. If recording is unsupported, the input meter can still work.
How do I fix echo or static in my mic?
Try disabling audio 'enhancements' in your OS sound settings, move the mic away from speakers, lower the playback volume, and close other apps using the microphone.
Verify the microphone your browser is actually using
The level meter follows incoming digital peaks. Recording uses the browser's MediaRecorder and creates a local playback clip; a moving meter alone does not establish clear speech quality.
A repeatable check
- Start the test, allow microphone access, and check the displayed device name against the microphone you intend to use.
- Record a short sentence at your normal speaking distance, followed by a few seconds of silence.
- Stop the recording and play it back. Compare speech clarity, background noise, and any distortion, then stop microphone capture.
What the result suggests
- The meter moves but the wrong microphone is listed
- Change the default input in browser or system settings, stop the test, and start again. A laptop microphone can respond even when the intended USB microphone is disconnected.
- Speech sounds rough or pumps in volume
- Try less input gain or more distance, then compare again. Check the displayed echo-cancellation and noise-suppression settings; processing can alter sustained sounds and pauses.
What this cannot establish
The meter is a relative digital level, not calibrated sound pressure. This browser check does not prove that a meeting or recording app has selected the same input or processing settings.
