Testing methodology and limitations
Understand what browser tests can tell you, what affects the results, and when you need a separate measurement.
A test signal is not a measurement
Tone, sweep, and channel tools generate digital signals in your browser. Your operating system, audio interface, and speakers determine the physical output. The waveform shows a digital signal, not proof that a speaker is working or a measured frequency-response curve. You interpret channel routing and rattles by listening. Comparable acoustic measurements require a calibrated microphone, a documented position, and separate measurement software.
Make comparisons repeatable
Note your browser, output device, connection, system volume, test frequency, and listening position. Start with short playback at low volume. Keep these conditions fixed and change one setting at a time. For example, check system balance before trying another source or cable for a quiet channel. If bass changes when you move your seat, room reflections may contribute. Do not keep increasing volume to hear an extreme frequency.
Microphone and decibel readings
Microphone tools read the input after you grant permission and display its signal level locally. The recording button creates a local playback clip. Input gain, automatic gain control, and noise processing affect the result. The current decibel tool adds a fixed offset to digital RMS level; it has no device-specific sound-pressure calibration or A-weighting. Use it to observe changes with the same setup, not to decide whether an environment is safe or meets a standard.
Latency, surround sound, and hearing demonstrations
Browser-reported latency and a manual audio/video sync judgment are different results; neither guarantees complete hardware round-trip latency. Surround playback depends on the channels exposed by the browser and operating system. Stereo output cannot verify physical rear speakers. Hearing demonstrations depend on your headphones, volume, and room. Their results are not clinical audiograms and cannot establish hearing age or diagnose hearing loss.
How to use buying guides
Use the buying guides as starting points for comparing features and use cases. Unless an article supplies its equipment, procedure, and results, do not interpret a recommendation as a laboratory-tested ranking. Product prices can become outdated; confirm the exact model, price, and return conditions with the retailer. Shopping links may earn a commission. All testing tools work without buying a product.

To report a mismatch between instructions and controls, send the page address, browser version, device, and steps to reproduce it. Private recordings are not needed.
