How do I check left and right channels?
Lower the system volume, press L, then R, and identify which speaker or earcup plays. Each signal stops after two seconds. With speakers, both ears may hear the same speaker; that alone does not indicate mono output.
What do the signal modes change?
Pure tone uses the selected 50–8000 Hz frequency. Pulsed tone switches that tone on and off; it is not speech. Short sweep runs from 100 to 4000 Hz in two seconds, independently of the tone-frequency setting.
Why do both speakers play either channel?
Check mono audio, spatial processing, channel balance and compatible adapters. Repeat with another output if needed. The tool routes a digital signal; your observation does not by itself identify the cause.
Check the channel route before judging the sound
Pure tone sends a sine wave to the left, right, or both output channels. Each sound stops after two seconds. The animated bars indicate playback activity; they do not measure the sound from your speakers.
A repeatable check
- Choose the intended output in your system settings and lower the volume. The initial signal is a 440 Hz pure tone.
- Press L, then R. Identify the physical side that plays, then use Both channels. Choose the observation that matches what you heard for a next step.
- Open Signal settings to change the tone frequency from 50 to 8000 Hz or choose Pulsed tone or Short sweep. The sweep uses its own fixed 100–4000 Hz range.
What the result suggests
- L and R both play through both sides
- Check the system's mono-audio setting and disable spatial processing temporarily. A mono speaker cannot demonstrate stereo separation.
- One side stays silent
- Center the system balance, reseat the connector, and repeat with another output device. This helps separate routing or connector faults from a single driver problem.
What this cannot establish
With loudspeakers, both ears naturally hear each speaker: identify the source speaker. The selected observation is your report, not an automatic diagnosis. Pulsed tone is synthesized sound, not recorded speech.
