How to Test Speaker Frequency Response at Home
You don't need a measurement microphone and acoustic software to learn a lot about your speakers. A free frequency sweep and a pair of ears can reveal rattles, dead drivers, and crossover problems in minutes.
What Frequency Response Actually Means
A speaker's frequency response describes how evenly it reproduces the audible spectrum — roughly 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Ideally, a speaker plays every frequency at the same relative level, so nothing sounds artificially boosted or missing. Real speakers deviate: some have “bright” highs, others “bloated” bass, and almost all roll off at the very extremes.
A sweep plays a tone that glides smoothly from low to high frequency. By listening as it climbs, you can hear where your speaker struggles.
The 5-Minute Test
- Set volume to a moderate level — loud enough to hear detail, quiet enough to stay safe.
- Run our frequency sweep from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
- Listen for the sweep's volume staying roughly even as it climbs. Most people perceive the middle as loudest — that's normal (your ears are more sensitive there).
- Watch for these red flags as you go.
What to Listen For
🔊 Rattles and buzzes
A buzzing at a specific frequency usually means something is physically vibrating — a loose screw, a torn surround, or a nearby object. Note the frequency, then hunt for the culprit.
📉 Sudden dropouts
If the sound disappears or dips sharply at a frequency, you may have a damaged driver or a crossover gap (in multi-driver speakers).
📈 Huge peaks
A frequency that suddenly booms is often a room mode — your room reinforcing that frequency — not a speaker fault. Move the speaker or your listening position and re-test to confirm.
Know Your Limits
Your room heavily colors what you hear — bass is especially affected by placement and room dimensions. For a precise measurement you'd need a calibrated microphone, but for catching rattles, dead drivers, and gross imbalances, an ear-and-sweep test is genuinely useful. Follow up with the tone generator to zero in on any frequency the sweep flagged.
