How to Tell If Your Speakers Are Out of Phase (And Fix It)
Your system sounds wrong — thin, hollow, with weak bass and a vocal that seems to float somewhere behind you. Before you blame your speakers, check one thing: phase.
What “Out of Phase” Actually Means
A speaker makes sound by pushing air out and pulling it back in. When two speakers are in phase, their cones move together — out and in at the same time — and the sound reinforces. When one is out of phase (its + and − wires are swapped), its cone moves the opposite direction. The two signals partially cancel.
Cancellation hits bass hardest because low-frequency wavelengths are long, so the two speakers are almost perfectly out of sync across your whole room. The result: weak, thin bass and a collapsed, unfocused stereo image.
The 30-Second Phase Test
Play a tone with both speakers in phase, then the same tone out of phase. Here's what to listen for:
✅ In phase sounds…
Centered, solid, full bass, locked-in vocals.
❌ Out of phase sounds…
Hollow, diffuse, thin bass, vocals that float oddly.
If the out-of-phase version sounds more centered than the in-phase version, one of your speakers is wired backwards. Run our free speaker phase test to confirm in seconds.
How to Fix It
- Power everything off before touching wiring.
- Pick ONE speaker and swap its + and − connections (at the speaker or the amp — not both).
- Re-run the phase test. If it now sounds centered and solid, you fixed it.
- Check the cable too — a mis-wired or damaged cable is a common hidden cause.
After fixing phase, verify overall channel balance with our stereo test and check frequency response with the frequency sweep.
