Do Headphones Need to Burn In? The Truth About Break-In

“Just give them 50 hours and they'll open up.” You've heard it in every headphone forum. But is burn-in real, or is it the audio world's favorite placebo?

What Burn-In Claims

The claim is that a headphone driver — the diaphragm that moves to create sound — is mechanically stiff out of the box, and that playing audio “loosens it up” over tens of hours, smoothing the frequency response and “opening up” the sound.

There's a kernel of physics here: driver surrounds doflex slightly with use, and a loudspeaker's mechanical parameters can shift by a fraction of a percent in its first hours. The question is whether that shift is audible — and the evidence says it usually isn't.

What the Science Actually Shows

Controlled measurements of headphones before and after hundreds of hours of use show changes so small — typically well under 1 dB — that they fall below the threshold of human hearing. Independent tests repeatedly find no audible differencebetween a brand-new pair and a “burned-in” pair.
